Nipple Reduction Procedure
Nipple reduction is a plastic surgery procedure that is normally used to decrease the size of the nipple. The procedure can also be used to sculpt and reshape the nipples, so they look more symmetrical and complement your overall breast and figure. Women who are very sensitive and image-conscious mostly seek this surgery.
The nipple reduction procedure starts with the placement of incisions on the nipples, with the goal to eliminate the surplus tissue. The type of anesthesia to be used during the procedure will depend on your surgeon’s preference and your candidacy for the surgery. In most cases, local anesthesia is used, though the use of general anesthesia cannot be ruled out. You should discuss this with your surgeon during the initial consultation.
The procedure can be completed within one hour for most patients. The nipple reduction is quite a straightforward surgery, so you may be allowed to go home a few hours after the procedure. Most patients completely recuperate from the surgical trauma within a few weeks after the surgery.
Patients must understand that the nipple reduction surgery can decrease the size of the nipple itself and that of the areola. If the nipple is protruding and the areola is very wide or uneven in shape, the nipple reduction surgery can fix the condition. There is no doubt that swollen and bulging nipples can be a source of tension and emotional distress for many women. Large nipples can make it uncomfortable for women to go swimming or wear tight T-shirts. Some patients even wear padding under their clothing to conceal their large nipples.
Men can also have large nipples, which can also affect self-esteem. As a result, men lose their confidence and face embarrassment when taking off their shirt to swim or during times of intimacy. This is the reason why a large number of men are also electing for nipple reduction procedure.
Like all other plastic surgery procedures, there are a number of risks and complications associated with nipple reduction. It is important to understand that nipple reduction will probably affect your breastfeeding capability. Majority of patients who went through this procedure are unable to breastfeed after nipple reduction. Thus, patients are advised to go for the surgery only when they have no plan of having additional children. Please note that you can only have this surgery at least 6 months after you’ve stopped breastfeeding, because your breasts and nipples need time to stabilize.
Other risks associated with nipple reduction include excessive bleeding, bruising, infections, scarring, inflammation, pain and discomfort, seroma, change in or loss of nipple sensation, and nipple asymmetry. It is also possible that the patient may feel unsatisfied with the aesthetic results of the surgery.
You must be in good health to qualify for the nipple reduction procedure. If you are suffering from serious illness, you should avoid undergoing the procedure. As in any plastic surgery procedure, you must fully understand limitations and have realistic expectations because a perfect outcome is never guaranteed.
