Is plastic surgery painful?

When patients decide to go under the knife to enhance their aesthetic appearances, there is one factor most of them are afraid of and that is the pain. Plastic surgery procedures are mostly performed under general anesthesia, which means that the patient would remain asleep throughout the surgery and will not experience any pain. However, once the patient wakes up from the effects of the anesthesia after the surgery, he or she may experience some degree of pain and discomforts.

The pain tolerance threshold differs from patient to patient. For example, two patients who have had liposuction would experience different levels of pain. One may experience a greater intensity of pain while the other may not experience pain at all. It depends on how much pain the patient can withstand. This is the reason why many doctors can’t tell you exactly if you would experience pain after plastic surgery and how much pain you can expect after procedure.

The intensity and occurrence of pain after plastic surgery also depends on the type of procedure being performed. A patient who is planning to have rhinoplasty can expect mild post-surgical pain. It is important to understand that while bones are in most cases, shaved or broken during rhinoplasty, the patient is still able to manage the pain with pain relief medications after the surgery. Other plastic surgeries performed on the face are also associated with mild pain.

Majority of breast enhancement procedures have also been found to be mildly painful. Even breast reduction can be less painful if you follow your surgeon’s instructions to the letter. However, when breast implants are placed underneath the breast muscle, you may expect to experience a moderate level of post-surgical pain. It has been noted that the more invasive a procedure, the higher the intensity of pain. As an example, an arm lift is a very invasive method so that it can be very painful for many patients.

Abdominoplasty patients can expect to experience mild to moderate levels of pain and discomfort after the surgery. The procedure is relatively more invasive and involves tautening of muscles aside from skin excision. Some abdominoplasty procedures even require liposuction at the same time. While liposuction can cause mild to moderate pain, when it is combined with a tummy tuck, the intensity of pain can increase. The post-operative pain associated with liposuction also depends on the amount of fat targeted for removal. The more fat removed, the greater the post-operative pain.

The good news is that the mild to moderate levels of pain can easily be managed with over-the- counter pain management medications. You can expect your surgeon to administer you pain relief medications after any plastic surgery procedure. As your body recovers from the surgical trauma, the intensity of pain would decrease. In most cases, the pain disappears within 2-3 days.

Your surgeon may offer you pain pumps to manage mild to moderate levels of pain. The external pump normally connects your surgical site to an anesthetic medication in a pack. The pump channels the anesthetic to the surgical area, which can ease the pain to a fair degree. If you are afraid of the pain after plastic surgery, discuss it with your surgeon and ask him or her for options to ease it.
