When is breast implant revision surgery needed?
While breast implants can stay in the body for a long time, they are basically prosthetics, which means you will be required to have them removed or replaced in the future. Breast revision surgery is the process of having the implants removed or replaced. It is also used to fix minor aesthetic imperfections in the breasts after getting the implants. In simple terms, once you get the breast implants, you should be ready for future visits to your plastic surgeon.
When you get breast implants, it does not mean that your breasts are resistant to changes induced by factors such as age, weight fluctuations, hormonal imbalance, and health issues. As you age, these factors will come into play and affect how your breasts look. Women who are not satisfied with the looks of their breasts can also have revision surgery to fix any undesirable features or flaws in their breasts.
Breast implant revision surgery mostly entails the removal and replacement of the breast implants, with the goal to overcome any undesirable characteristics induced by the original implants. Patients undergo implants revision e to either overcome aesthetic problems in the breasts or to treat physical pain and problems induced by the presence of the first implants.
When to seek breast implant revision surgery
Every patient has a different reason to undergo breast implant revision surgery, but the most common reasons are medical and cosmetic. Some patients may experience a change in their aesthetic goals over time and may thus decide to go for a revision surgery. Others may find that their breasts do not fit their personality or physical outline immediately after a breast augmentation surgery. Some may think that their breasts have become too big or small. Moreover, some patients face physical discomfort and medical problems after getting the implants.
You may be required to undergo the revision procedure in case you have a saline breast implant that has ruptured. A ruptured saline implant will deflate and change your breast shape immediately. During the surgery, the implants will be removed and replaced with newer ones.
On the other hand, if you have silicone breast implants that have ruptured, a revision surgery would be an option for you to remove and replace the ruptured implant. When a silicone implant ruptures it goes unnoticed, as there will be no change in breast size and shape. The silicone gel normally remains within the shell or the breast tissue after the rupture. This keeps your breasts intact. The rupture can be detected by getting your breasts scanned under an MRI. Though you may decide to keep your breasts the way they are, undergoing a revision surgery may bring you some peace of mind. While the silicone implant rupture does not change the breast size or shape, many patients feel insecure.
The third problem that may necessitate a breast implant revision surgery is capsular contracture, which happens when the capsule that normally develops around the implants starts to harden. The capsule can contract, squeezing the implants and making the breasts appear undesirable in shape. This condition can also create physical pain and discomfort. A revision surgery will remove the capsule to treat the condition. In some cases, removal and replacement of the breast implant may be necessary.
Another problem that can be treated by revision surgery is breast asymmetry. If your breasts have become uneven after getting implants, a revision surgery can help fix the condition. It is worth noting that even though a breast implant surgery can deliver good results, the results may not be according to your desires or expectations. If your breasts are differently positioned or sized, the revision surgery will involve a removal and replacement of the implants or change in position of the implants to treat the condition.
Furthermore, you may not like your breast size after an implant surgery. For example, if large implants are used, it can cause both aesthetic and physical problems for you. The revision surgery to treat this condition will involve a removal of the large implants and its replacement with a more ideally sized implant.
Other problems that can be treated by breast implant revision surgery include bottoming out of the implants and ptosis. Bottoming out occurs when the breasts become saggy and the nipples stand high after a breast implant surgery. Ptosis is also a common problem that occurs when the use of very large implants triggers the development of extra, loose skin on the breasts. A revision surgery to correct this problem would involve an exchange of the existing implants with smaller ones. A mastopexy may also be performed. Breast implant revision surgery is also effective in treating implant rippling.
Breast implant revision surgery is an effective way to address aesthetic and medical problems arising from a breast augmentation surgery. The surgery can help address problems like asymmetrical breasts, ptosis, implant rupture and rippling, capsular contracture, and other similar problems. In most cases, the revision surgery will remove the existing implants and replace it with newer ones. In some cases, changing the implant position can help overcome the associated problems.
