Uneven nipples after breast augmentation
Breast augmentation is an effective plastic surgery procedure to increase the size of your breasts and make them appear shapely and perky. The surgery can be performed either by placing implants inside your breasts or by injecting your own body fat into your breasts. Having prominent breasts have become the standard of beauty over time, and women with petite or flatter breasts often face embarrassment and lower self-esteem as a result. Perky, shapely, and bigger breasts are also considered as signs of fertility and femininity.
Women who have naturally smaller or flatter breasts and women who have lost their breast size and shape due to illness, pregnancy, or gravity can undergo breast augmentation surgery to enhance their breasts. The procedure will add projection to your breasts and make them appear fuller and perkier. Breast augmentation can also be used to reconstruct the breasts after mastectomy.
Compared to breast implants, the use of fat transfer is deemed safer and better. However, there is no guarantee the improvements will be the same as expected. Breast augmentation procedures do not promise perfection. You can become dissatisfied with the results even years after surgery. There is also a likelihood that your aesthetic goals and desires may change over time, leading you to want to change your breast size or shape.
Even though breast augmentation surgery is fairly safe, there are still risks involved. Selecting an unskilled and inexperienced practitioner to perform your surgery can cause disastrous outcomes. One of the major issues that most patients face after surgery is unevenness or asymmetry in the nipples.
Nipples may become uneven or irregular after a breast augmentation procedure. This means that the nipples are pointing in different directions or are positioned differently. The ideal position of the nipple-areola complex should be at a place that makes the breasts appear perky, raised, and balanced. Unfortunately, many patients experience unevenness in the nipples after breast augmentation surgery. The risk is higher for patients who fall into the hands of inexperienced, unlicensed, or unprofessional practitioners.
What causes irregular nipples?
Irregular nipples can be caused by a host of factors. One of the top-contributing factors is the natural position of the nipple-areola complex. The doctor must take into consideration the position of the nipples, whether they are inherently pointing forward, in the direction of the cleavage, or downward. Failure to do so will put you at risk of getting irregular nipples. You will be required to undergo an additional surgery to correct the problem.
The second common factor that increases your risk of uneven nipples is the size of the breast implants. Breast implants that do not meet your chest dimensions will trigger the creation of irregular nipples. Another factor that can lead to uneven nipples is how your breast implants have been positioned relative to the inframammary crease. Inexperienced and unlicensed practitioners often commit the mistake of positioning the implants so high that the nipples start pointing down. Also, if the implant is placed very low, the nipples will point up, and if the implants are placed to the extreme sides, the nipples will point to the midline.
Breast augmentation patients who get uneven breasts often suffer emotional ordeal. The condition can be fixed by using a corrective surgery.
Correcting uneven nipples
Your breast implants will not deliver the expected results immediately after surgery. The implants need time to settle for about 3 to 6 months. It can take more time for the breasts to look and feel regular after the original surgery, so there is no need to panic and rush to your surgeon early on.
If your nipples continue to appear uneven after six months, you should see your doctor. If your doctor thinks there is no chance the implants will settle, you will be recommended to undergo a corrective surgery. The corrective procedure is normally performed on an outpatient basis and under local anesthesia. It can be completed within an hour.
The procedure to fix the uneven nipples can cause some degree of pain, swelling, and discomfort that will disappear within a few hours after surgery. The corrective surgery may involve replacing your current implant with a newer one. If the condition is severe, you may also be required to undergo a minor mastopexy to fix the irregularity in your nipples.
Nipple unevenness is one of the most common issues patients come across after breast augmentation. While attaining the most ideal or perfect nipple is not possible, certain measures can be taken during surgery to achieve the best look possible. Nipple irregularity can occur as a result of a surgical error, lack of expertise of the surgeon, unrealistic goals of the patient, breast implant size, and other factors.
Uneven nipples after a breast augmentation procedure can be corrected through an additional surgery that may involve the removal and replacement of the existing implant with newer ones. The corrective surgery may also involve breast lifting. If you want to avoid uneven nipples, make sure to choose only a board-certified plastic surgeon to perform the breast augmentation surgery.
