Breast implants cancer

Nowadays, breast augmentation procedures are common interventions that many patients want to undergo to enhance their looks. And talking about enhancement, silicone implant is usually being chosen for breast augmentation.

But as breast augmentation procedures are dramatically becoming the solution for many people when it comes to their insecurities about their figure and profile, it is undeniable that there has always been concern about breast implants causing health issues. The connection can be traced back to the history of breast implants.

Studies have been carried out and experts are concern about breast implants that can cause ductal carcinoma of the breast. This condition is the most common form of breast cancer. Further studies show that the substance this implant is made of does not cause any harm to the patient’s body as they are sterile and has passed medical requirements.

But recently, the Food and Drug Administration or the FDA has identified a possible connection between the development of ALCL and breast implants.

Anaplastic large cell lymphoma (ALCL) is a very rare type of cancer of the immune system. Studies also show that patients with breast implants may have a very low but increased risk of developing this kind of cancer. There is still plenty of ongoing research that is being carried out in order to fully understand the relationship between ALCL and breast implants.

These findings do not necessarily mean that you need your breast implants to be removed. However, you must be keen enough to visit your surgeon from time to time especially if you are suspecting that something wrong is going on.  You must look out for non-specific such as capsular contracture, tenderness, redness and breast enlargement. Maintaining a follow up check up to your plastic surgeon is crucial if you want to be sure of your safety.
