How breast surgery is performed

Cosmetic breast surgery is somehow similar to other surgeries. The difference is that the goal of the operation varies in technical aspects as well as the outcome. The said surgery involves the preoperative stage, the actual operation, and the postoperative follow-up.

The preoperative stage marks the development of the operative plan, which involves the psychological, emotional and health preparation of the patients. It is important for patients to communicate clearly with their plastic surgeon for them to discuss their needs, preferences, and expectations. On the other hand, the surgeon will also need to evaluate the physical condition of the patient in order to deem which techniques are appropriate for the patient. The surgeon will tell the patient if her expectations are possible to make. To avoid being unsatisfied, the patient should make realistic expectations. It is also important for the patient to learn the advantages, disadvantages, and limitations of the intervention during the pre-op in order to better prepare them for the surgery.

During the intervention, local anesthesia can be used for minor surgical procedures. For aesthetic breast surgery, only the procedures used for correcting small imperfections in the areola or nipples can be performed under local anesthesia. Conversely, a cosmetic breast surgery is performed under general anesthesia, which can take one to four hours depending on the complexity of the procedure. If complications occur during the surgery, the intervention can take longer than the expected time.

Surgeons recommend the patients wear a dressing or a compression garment after the surgery. These garments will minimize the swelling and will support the new breasts. The use of the compression garments is essential to achieve a satisfactory result after breast surgery. If everything goes smoothly, the patient should be able to return to work within the first week after the procedure but this depends on the type of job the patient has. Keep in mind that strict adherence to the surgeon’s recommendations is imperative to your recovery. Proper post-operative care can ensure a speedy recovery.
