When is the breast implant revision surgery needed?

While you will be able to enjoy for a long time, the many benefits of breast implants, do note they are not made to last for a lifetime. Down the road, you would be required to go for a breast implant revision surgery. You may either have to replace the implants, remove them without replacement or fix the aesthetic imperfections through minor procedures and touch ups. Put simply, when you get breast implants, you should expect future visits to your plastic surgeon to discuss any aesthetic changes in your breasts that happens with the passage of time.

Getting breast implants doesn’t mean your breasts are immuned from certain factors like aging, weight changes, hormonal changes, and gravity. Over time, these factors affect the appearance of your breasts. Patients who become dissatisfied with the appearance of their breasts years after getting breast implants may undergo a revision surgery to correct the aesthetic imperfections and restore the projection and shape of the breasts.

The breast implant revision procedure normally removes or replaces the breast implants. Doing so helps correct the aesthetic imperfections or physical complications that may have risen. There are two major reasons why people go for a breast implant revision surgery: to fix the aesthetic imperfections or to treat the associated physical discomforts and health complications.

When do you need breast implant revision surgery?

Different patients need breast implant revision surgery for different reasons, but the most common reasons are medical and cosmetic needs. For some, it is a change of heart, a feeling that it doesn’t fit present lifestyle, or that the implants are too large or too small. For others, medical complications would necessitate the need for breast implant revision surgery.

You may need to undergo breast implant revision surgery in the following cases:

Saline implant deflation: If you have got saline implants, they may deflate after leakage. This condition will flatten your breasts. If deflation has occurred in one implant, your breasts may appear asymmetrical. You will need to undergo a revision surgery to either remove or replace the saline implant. Replacement of the saline implant will help restore your breast symmetry, projection, and other aesthetic features.

Silicone implant rupture: You may be required to undergo a breast implant revision surgery if your silicone implant has ruptured. While detection of a silicone implant rupture is difficult and you may be required to get an MRI scan, a revision surgery can help deliver you peace of mind. Rupture of a silicone implant has little effect on the evenness and shape of the breast, but since the implant is compromised and the patient may feel insecure, a revision surgery may be needed to replace the implant with a newer one.

Capsular contracture: Capsular contracture occurs when the scar tissue or capsule that forms around the breast implant hardens, making it painful and uncomfortable for the patient. Here the implant is fine and intact, but the capsule is witnessing changes. The scar tissue is becoming thicker, which is tightening and squeezing the implant. Severe forms of capsular contracture can lead to a change in shape of the breast. A revision surgery is needed to treat capsular contracture. During the surgery, the capsule will be removed. The implants may also be removed or replaced to treat the condition.

Breast asymmetry or irregularity: If your breasts have lost symmetry after the breast implant surgery, a revision surgery can help correct the condition. While breast implants offer good results, there is never a guarantee for perfection. After breast augmentation with implants, your breasts or nipples may become uneven. Asymmetry of the breasts means your breasts are differently positioned or differently sized, or the nipples are pointing in different directions. During a breast implant revision surgery, the root cause of the issue will be addressed and your breasts will regain symmetry.

Change in implant size: Many patients are not happy with their implants size after the breast augmentation surgery. If the original implant is not in proportion with your chest dimensions and overall figure, you may not get aesthetically appealing breasts. You may feel the need to either decrease or increase the size of your breast implants. This can be done in a breast implant revision surgery. During the procedure, the plastic surgeon will replace the original implant with a new, more appropriately sized implant. In most cases, replacing the large implants with smaller ones does the work.

Bottoming out: Bottoming out is an aesthetic condition that is characterized by sagging breasts after getting breast implants. Your implants will appear loose, extremely low while your nipples will appear extremely high. In order to correct this condition, you will be required to undergo a breast implant revision surgery. During the procedure, the implants will be repositioned, so they are more secure. A biological support tissue matrix called a Strattice may be used to recreate the breast to achieve the aesthetic goal.

Ptosis: There is also a chance that the use of very large breast implants would trigger the creation of surplus breast skin and loose breasts. The condition is called ptosis. A breast implant revision surgery can be used to fix the condition. During the revision surgery, the breast implants will be exchanged with smaller, more fitting ones. Also, a breast lift procedure will be conducted to fix the condition.

Implant rippling: Implant rippling is yet another factor that necessitates a revision surgery. If your breast implant is visible through the surface of your skin, you may choose to undergo a revision surgery during which your own body fat will be used to disguise the ripples.

Conclusion

Breast implant revision surgery can help treat a number of aesthetic and health complications arising from breast implants. Breast implant revision surgery is needed if one or both of your implants has either ruptured or deflated. Also, if your breasts have become uneven, or if capsular contracture has occurred, a revision surgery can help correct the problem. Ptosis, bottoming up and implant rippling can also be fixed through breast implant revisions surgery.
