At what age can you have an abdominoplasty?

For most plastic surgeries, the minimum age required to be eligible for a procedure is 18 years old. While age is an essential factor, the general condition of the patient (anatomy, weight etc.) are also key elements when undergoing a procedure such as a tummy tuck.

For younger patients, liposuction can sometimes be enough to restore a flat belly

Bellies of young patients who haven’t gone through multiple pregnancies can sometimes be improved by performing a liposuction on the abdomen alone. In most cases, an abdominoplasty is not necessary. These are often patients who have elastic skin and have excess fat in the abdomen area. Fat tissue on the abdomen can be difficult to eliminate with diet and exercise, but liposuction can address the problem efficiently as the skin quality of young patients retracts easier.

If a patient has stretch marks below the navel, a sagging tummy, and excess skin or a distention of the abdominal muscles, the optimal plastic surgery treatment would be a tummy tuck. Excessive abdomen skin can occur at any age and can be a result of drastic weight loss or multiple pregnancies. The abdominal muscles can be weakened, making the belly protrude. This can be fixed and flattened only through a tummy tuck intervention.

Keep in mind that the procedure is not recommended for overweight or obese patients. Tummy tuck is not a weight loss procedure, but merely a plastic surgery procedure targeting the stomach area.

Is there a maximum age limit for undergoing abdominoplasty?

Senior patients can benefit from aesthetic or reconstructive surgery if their health condition permits. The plastic surgeon will perform a series of examinations to assess if the patient is a good candidate for a tummy tuck surgery. Poor blood circulation, lung or heart conditions, as well as a history of phlebitis, are some contraindications for a tummy tuck. Men and women can have a tummy tuck even in their 60s if they are not suffering from certain health conditions.

It is recommended for senior patients who are overweight and suffering from chronic illness to reconsider surgery. Complications can be life-threatening and the recovery process can be long and difficult. When considering plastic surgery of any type, make it a priority to weigh the risks and benefits before making the decision to go under the knife.

When is an abdominoplasty needed?

Stretch marks, distention of abdominal wall muscles, loss of tonus, fat deposits, and sagging skin are mostly due to weight fluctuations, a sedentary lifestyle, multiple pregnancies, as well as a poor skin quality that is either hereditary or caused by a hormonal disorder. These imperfections cause more and more people to resort to plastic surgery.

To correct these conditions, the plastic surgeon can either perform an abdominal liposuction or a tummy tuck. A tummy tuck is performed when there is also the need to remove the skin from the lower abdomen to be able to tighten the tummy and create an improved profile. During the tummy tuck, the plastic surgeon will perform an incision from hip to hip and remove the excess skin and fat tissue on the inferior part of the abdomen. The abdominal muscles will then be strengthened and the belly is moved to a more natural position. Depending on the amount of skin and fat to be removed, the surgeon can recommend a complete tummy tuck or a mini tummy tuck.

Due to the advancement of modern plastic surgery techniques, the procedure is now performed with few risks and complications, as well as a high satisfaction rate.

Before the tummy tuck

A consultation with your plastic surgeon is required to find out all the details as well as get a financial estimate of the procedure. A visit to the anesthetist is also mandatory. A tummy tuck is usually performed under general anesthesia and only in rare cases under epidural or spinal anesthesia. Before the surgery is scheduled, the plastic surgeon will advise you to get as close as possible to your ideal weight so you can enjoy a flat stomach after the operation. Patients shouldn’t consider going under the knife for weight loss purposes as they might be greatly disappointed after the procedure is performed.

Whether performed for restorative or cosmetic purposes, a tummy tuck surgery usually takes one and two hours, depending on the type of procedure and the need for combining it with liposuction and diastasis correction. Hospitalization of 24 hours is often sufficient. When the surgery is finished, a compression bandage will be put on the abdomen area to help with the healing process and reduce swelling.

As long as you are of legal age, there is no maximum age limit to undergoing a tummy tuck procedure for as long as your health is in good condition. Keep in mind that for younger patients, the results are better and the healing process is much faster and easier, but this shouldn’t discourage you from considering the procedure if you think you are an eligible candidate for tummy tuck surgery.
