Breast lipofilling: How big will my breasts be?

Breast lipofilling is a modern plastic surgery procedure that entails the use of the patient’s own fat cells that are transferred to the breasts after being purified in a complex centrifugation process. The procedure consists of a combination of liposuction performed on areas with an excess of adipose tissue and the transfer of the fat to the breasts that is done by using special syringes.

The main condition that makes the patient eligible for breast lipofilling is having one or multiple areas of the body with an excess of adipose tissue while having a normal body weight. Being overweight is generally a contraindication for most plastic surgery procedures, including breast lipofilling. This means that the ideal patient for breast lipofilling has a normal weight that has been stable for over six months and fat deposits in areas difficult to address with exercise and diets.

Even if fat is probably one of the substances that most people would donate with great joy to others who need it for augmentation, the reality is that fat can’t be transplanted from one person to the other, not even if that person is your identical twin. Some plastic surgeons would recommend patients to gain some weight before undergoing the procedure if they don’t have enough adipose tissue in the body.

The results of the breast lipofilling procedure are dependent on the amount of fat that is available for transfer. This means that the size of your breasts is dependent on the fat that can be collected from areas with a surplus of fat. The areas usually targeted with liposuction for fat transfer to the breasts are the abdomen and flanks. A maximum of six to seven liters of fat can be safely extracted during a single liposuction session, but this quantity also depends on the weight and height of the patient. This fat needs to be extracted by an experienced plastic surgeon with a suitable liposuction procedure that won’t damage the fat cells. It is only the pure and healthy fat cells that will be used for grafting into the breasts, so it is important to harvest the fat in a delicate manner to preserve and keep most of the fat cells intact. The centrifugation process will eliminate the blood, impurities and damaged fat cells. After this process is completed, often no more than 2 liters of fat are left for the transfer to the breasts.

If your breasts have more tissue, the plastic surgeon can transfer a larger quantity of fat. If your breasts lack tissue, it is only a limited amount of fat that can be transferred. The size of your breasts is also dependent on the initial tissues of the breasts. Generally speaking, with the breast lipofilling procedure we aim to increase the size of the breasts with one bra cup size or half of a size. A more considerable augmentation can only be achieved with breast implants.
