Dry skin on the breasts after breast enhancement surgery

Breast enhancement is a popular plastic surgery performed on a daily basis all over the world. Each year, millions of women get the breasts of their dreams with the help of this plastic surgery procedure that is both safe and efficient. The procedure often takes no longer than an hour and a half to be performed, and it is followed by a recovery period of about two weeks and with the final results ready for assessment after six to nine months.

Despite what some people tend to believe, this plastic surgery procedure delivers immediate results in terms of the fact that the breasts are increased after the implants are positioned inside them, but for the implants to settle and the side effects of the procedure to subside, it can take a few more months, depending from patient to patient.

One condition that many patients can experience is dry skin on the breasts. This can be quite unpleasant, considering the general discomfort associated with the first few days post-op. However, it is important to know that the cicatrization of the incisions can take a while. The cicatrization is the natural process during which the skin tissue heals after lesions have injured it. It is inevitable to be left with scars after breast enhancement surgery. Even if their location might be different (periareolar, in the inframammary fold, or in the axilla), each surgery will leave behind scars that will change their appearance in the months following the procedure but will never disappear.

The cicatrization process has different stages. During the initial stages, the skin around the scars can be dry, itchy and with a different color compared to the surrounding tissues. This is completely normal, and the plastic surgeon will tell you what the signs of abnormal scarring that you need to look after are.

The skin on the breasts can be dry due to the trauma that occurred on the breasts during surgery and because of a lack of proper hydration. The eating and drinking regimen after breast enhancement surgery is very important for the overall well-being of the patient and also the skin condition. What we eat and drink affects how our skin looks and feels. A lack of nutrients and vitamins in the food can lead to a decrease in the levels of collagen and elastin, and hence a poor-quality skin. A lack of proper hydration can also cause dry skin that can even be itchy.

Another cause of dry skin on the breasts can be the excessive use of soaps or gel that are too harsh for the skin’s PH and which damage the acidic mantle of the skin. While having dry skin on the breasts after plastic surgery can be uncomfortable and unpleasant, the recommendation is not to apply moisturizing products until the incisions are completely closed and only after you get the plastic surgeon’s consent.
