Losing weight after getting breast surgery

Weight fluctuations can significantly affect the appearance of the body, especially when it comes to areas such as the breasts and the tummy where the skin is sensitive, delicate, and prone to sagginess even from a youthful age.

When considering undergoing plastic surgery to enhance the appearance of the body, the plastic surgeon will ask you about certain habits and also how your weight has fluctuated over the years. If you have a history of not being able to maintain a constant weight for a considerable amount of time, the plastic surgeon will tell you about the risks involved. Weight fluctuations after getting breast surgery often lead to an alteration of the aesthetic results.

The less significant risks are associated with breast implant surgery. The results are not so affected if the patient loses weight; however, if the fat tissue on the breasts is significantly reduced, the implants might become more visible, especially if they are positioned in front of the pectoral muscle and under the mammary gland. Effects such as implant rippling and implant visibility and palpability can occur, determining the need for a revision surgery or changing the implants. However, it is important to understand that these effects are triggered only if the patient loses a significant amount of weight and in a short period of time.

If the breast surgery makes use of the patient’s own fat cells to enhance the breasts, losing weight can do much more damage if it occurs afterwards. To be able to sustain the results after breast lipofilling, patients are advised to keep a stable weight. Even something as insignificant as a weight loss of more than 2 kg per month can alter the results achieved.

Keep in mind that the fat cells transferred to the breasts during the surgery will start behaving like they were always there after they develop a blood network that will ensure their survival. This often happens in the first few months after the procedure. Six months post-op, the fat in the breasts will react to weight fluctuations and especially weight loss, just like the fat that was initially in the breasts. Unfortunately, when weight loss occurs, it rarely addresses areas from where the patient would like to lose weight such as the abdomen or the flanks. Often the results of losing weight are first reflected on the face and the breasts. This is why it is important to undergo breast surgery only when you know you can sustain a normal, stable weight for the long term. Make sure to discuss the details of your weight history with the plastic surgeon before scheduling the procedure and also avoid drastic weight loss diets or programs both before and after breast surgery to have a smooth recovery and results that are long-lasting.
