Bleeding in the internal pocket after breast implant surgery

Breast implant surgery is one of the two methods to increase the size of the breasts offered by modern plastic surgery nowadays. The procedure is safe and efficient when performed by a talented and experienced board-certified plastic surgeon, but not without risks and potential complications. While it is indeed a procedure performed mostly for aesthetic purposes, it is still a complex surgery that entails significant incisions on the breasts or the axilla and the insertion of external prostheses in a pocket inside the breasts.

When performed, the plastic surgeon will advise the patient about the type of implant to choose and also recommend a suitable location of the incision and placement of the implant depending on the patient’s physical characteristics and expected results. The surgeon will make incisions around the areola, in the fold under the breasts or on the axilla. Then he will section through the tissues of the breasts until reaching behind the mammary gland or the pectoral muscles where he will create a pocket that will host the implants. After the pocket is created, the implants are placed and the incisions are sutured.

A risk of breast augmentation surgery that is also common for any other type of surgery is bleeding. Bleeding can occur during and after the procedure from the incisions or inside the tissues of the breasts. During the operation, the plastic surgeon will control the level of bleeding and take measures to prevent excessive bleeding. After the procedure, the patient is advised to adopt a certain post-op behavior and avoid intense physical activities to avoid bleeding.

When internal bleeding occurs, the result is the formation of hematomas. A hematoma is an accumulation of blood that can be present on the incision site or in the internal pocket where the implants have been inserted. Generally speaking, a hematoma is not a severe complication to be worried about. Small hematomas can occur after any type of surgery and usually disappear without additional treatment in a weeks or months. However, if a larger hematoma has developed, it is important to meet with the plastic surgeon and allow him to recommend a course of action.

To avoid excessive bleeding during and after breast implant surgery, patients are advised to avoid taking anti-inflammatory medication as well as certain natural supplements that have blood thinning properties and hence can lead to more bleeding than normal. Also, make sure to discuss this issue with the plastic surgeon if you have been confronted with excessive bleeding in the past after other surgeries.

Bleeding in the internal pocket after breast implant surgery can rarely require the need for an additional procedure. The plastic surgeon will evaluate the condition during the follow-up consultations.
