Breast augmentation is one of the most sought procedures. Aside from it is one of the simplest surgeries, it is also the kind of intervention where you can see immediate results. As discussed before, part of breast augmentation is placing an implant. Anyone who wishes to undergo breast enhancement can choose between silicone implants and saline implants. Of the two choices mentioned, silicone implant has become the preference of many patients. However, there has always been a concern regarding breast implants. It is believed that having breast implants regardless of the type of implant used, can pose health risks.
One common question asked by patients is if breast implants can have a negative effect on a baby. It has been suggested that children born to and breastfed by, mothers with silicone breast implants might be adversely affected by transmammary or transplacental delivery of silicone during either breastfeeding or pregnancy. Silicone is an inert material. This means that it will not create abnormal reactions even if it is inserted into the body. In addition, silicone can be found in different products. There has been little evidence regarding the elevation of blood or serum silicon or silicone concentrations in women with silicone breast implants.
Some of you might ask regarding silicone diffusing through the milk ducts and entering the breast milk. The current evidence does not support diffusion or transport of silicone gel across membranes that will lead to silicone in the breast milk. Measurement of silicon or silicone concentrations in the breast milk of women with implants has provided some insights into whether silicone reaches breast milk by other means. Studies have shown that the concentrations of silicone in breast milk in patients with and without breast implants are statistically not significant. Though some patients might develop capsular contracture, the body will always create a scar around the implant, but know that the silicone itself is not toxic.
